Vignettes is a visual exploration of the influential moments, experiences, and cultural forces that shaped David Ibata into the person and artist he is today. Growing up in Washington, D.C., during a period of significant transition, Ibata witnessed a city and culture in constant evolution. His work draws from the people, places, images, sounds, and experiences that surrounded him—from the movies and media that captured his imagination to the music that defined generations and the realities of violence that were an unavoidable part of life.

Each work serves as a vignette—a fragment of memory and a chapter in a larger story. Ibata reflects on how these experiences shaped the way he understood himself and the world around him. Rather than presenting his memories as a straightforward chronology, he revisits them through layered imagery and personal interpretation, exploring both the beauty and complexity of growing up in Washington, D.C. The work considers not only what he experienced, but how he processed, understood, and coped with the world around him.

Together, these vignettes tell a story of becoming. They reveal the lasting influence of formative experiences and the ways in which culture, environment, memory, and circumstance become part of who we are. Through his art, Ibata transforms personal history into a broader reflection on growing up, navigating change, and finding ways to make sense of the world—ultimately creating a portrait of the person he has become.
